
ABOUT MAME
BACKGROUND
We are a community of passionate music educators and music enthusiasts dedicated to promoting excellence in music education across Malaysia. Through our advocacy efforts and activities, we aim to inspire an appreciation for the value of music and elevate the standard of music education in our country.
GOALS
The goals of MAME are to champion the importance of music education in Malaysia, to contribute to the development of music teaching & learning as well as research & publication activities in Malaysia, to enhance the professionalism of Malaysian music educators, and to encourage the appreciation of music and music education among all levels of Malaysian society.
MEET THE TEAM

DR. RAMONA BINTI MOHD. TAHIR
PRESIDENT
Associate Professor Dr. Ramona Mohd. Tahir received her Ph.D from Northwestern University, Evanston, Illinois under the supervision of Bennett Reimer. Her current portfolio includes board member of the Asia Pacific Symposium for Music Education Research (APSMER); president of the Malaysian Association for Music Education (MAME); executive committee member of Music Malaysia (Gabungan Persatuan Industri Muzik Malaysia) and the Southeast Asia Directors of Music (SEADOM) association; and Yamaha Higher Grade Examiner. She has organized numerous public concerts, workshops, and seminars including the GLOMUS2015 and APSMER2017 conferences. In 2006 she was chair of the Conference Organizing Group of the 27th International Society for Music Education World Conference in Kuala Lumpur – to date, the only ISME world conference held in South East Asia. She has presented keynote, plenary, and papers as well as served as a panelist at music and music education conferences in Russia, Mozambique, Australia, China, Thailand, Tanzania, Lithuania, Azerbaijan, and Malaysia. Ramona has significant experiences as an academic administrator, having served in positions such as head of department, programme coordinator, coordinator of international relations, deputy dean (academic) and Dean of Universiti Teknologi MARA’s (UiTM) Faculty of Music from 2012 till 2017. She is currently attached to the Department of Music Education & Music Business at UiTM’s College of Creative Arts. Among the courses she teaches at the university are Music Education in Malaysia, Music Management and Supervision, Music Theory as well as History and Philosophy of Music Education.

DR. CLARE CHAN SUET CHING
VICE PRESIDENT
Clare Chan Suet Ching is an Associate Professor of Ethnomusicology at the Music Department of the Faculty of Human Ecology, Universiti Putra Malaysia. Previously, she taught at the Music and Music Education Department of Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (2002–2022), where she served as Deputy Dean of Research and Graduate Studies (2011–2017) and Chief Editor of the Malaysian Journal of Music (2015–2021). She earned her PhD in Music (Ethnomusicology) from the University of Hawai’i at Mānoa in 2010. A recipient of several prestigious fellowships, Clare was awarded the Fulbright (2005–2007), the Asia-Pacific Graduate Fellowship in Ethnomusicology (2005–2007), and the East-West Center Graduate Degree Fellowship (2008–2010). Clare Chan Suet Ching ialah Profesor Madya dalam bidang Etnomuzikologi di Jabatan Muzik, Fakulti Ekologi Manusia, Universiti Putra Malaysia. Sebelum ini, beliau pernah mengajar di Jabatan Muzik and Pendidikan Muzik, Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (2002–2022), di mana beliau berkhidmat sebagai Timbalan Dekan Penyelidikan dan Pengajian Siswazah (2011–2017) dan Ketua Editor Malaysian Journal of Music (2015–2021). Beliau memperoleh PhD Muzik dalam bidang Etnomusikologi dari Universiti Hawai'i di Mānoa pada tahun 2010. Beliau juga adalah penerima beberapa biasiswa berprestij seperti bisasiswa Fulbright (2005–2007), the Asia-Pacific Graduate Fellowship in Ethnomusicology (2005–2007), and the East-West Center Graduate Degree Fellowship (2008–2010).

MUHAMMAD AMIRUL ABDUL HAMID
SECRETARY
Amirul is a dedicated music educator with a strong foundation in early childhood music and creative music services. Since 2018, he has taught Music & Movement to children aged 2–6 at Global Educare and Beaconhouse Malaysia, where he also explores various music teaching methods, led concert music programs, and composed or arranged pieces for school events. As a freelancer, he provides music engraving, arranging, and tutoring services, showcasing versatility across choral, orchestral, and traditional Malay music. He has also taught choir, wind orchestra, and aural skills at institutions such as UniKL Mimet, Lumut, Perak and Sekolah Dato’ Abdul Razak, Negeri Sembilan, nurturing young musicians in both performance and theory. Amirul has participated in professional music education events including the APSMER Conference and Cipta Ekspres project with MACP. His compositions, such as Unknown Legacy and Jika, have been internationally premiered and received national recognition, while his choir performances have won Gold Awards at the Pablo Casals and Isola del Sole International Choir Competitions in 2022. Through his teaching, composition, and performance, Amirul continues to inspire creativity and musical excellence in education.

TAN SHI MIN
VICE SECRETARY
Tan Shi Min is a lecturer in Music Education at the Institute of Teacher Education Tuanku Bainun Campus, where she aims to make music education more accessible in Malaysian public schools. Her work centres on piano pedagogy, performance, singing, and accompaniment, alongside supervising undergraduate theses and school practicums. A Chevening Scholar and graduate of University College London (MA Music Education, 2023/24), Shi Min also performed actively during her studies, showcasing her original compositions during the Women in Diplomacy concert hosted by Karen-Mae Hill, the High Commissioner of Antigua, in addition to performing as piano accompanist for opera singer Samantha Heagreaves and the Goodenough College Choir in London. Her commitment to innovative and inclusive pedagogy has been recognised both nationally and internationally. She was a Top 10 Finalist of the Malaysia Teacher Prize 2022, a recipient of the Pendang District Innovative Teacher Award (Anugerah Guru Inovatif) in 2022, and recently won gold medals for her music education innovation “Saron Penta” in innovation competitions held throughout 2025. Prior to this, Shi Min has presented her innovative teaching practices in Slovenia and France, and published in the MAME Bulletin on sustainable music education. In 2025, she was also invited to speak at the Sabah Creative Economy Summit, highlighting the importance of strategic collaborations and innovative approaches to making music education more accessible in Malaysian public schools.

KONG YAU YAU
TREASURER
Kong Yau Yau is a senior assistant in SJKC Damansara, Selangor. He holds a Bachelor's degree in Music Education with honors from the Teacher's Training Institute of Malaysia Campus Tuanku Bainun. He has also served as main trainer for Music Education in Petaling Utama District since 2013. Currently he is appointed as Assessor Officer Recognition of Prior Experience (PP-PPT), External Validator of the Accredited Training Centre System (PPL-SLaPB) & External Validator of Recognition of Prior Experience (PPL-PPT).

YM RAJA NADIAH BINTI RAJA ZAHARUDDIN SHAH

YM Raja Nadiah binti Raja Zaharuddin Shah is a primary school music teacher who recently got posted to her second school, at SK Bandar Tun Razak (2) after graduating in Master of Music Education from UiTM Shah Alam. A Music Excellent Teacher specific in music education. Plays the violin, keyboard, guitar, ukulele, drum, and percussions.

YEW ZHI YONG
COMMITTEE MEMBER
Yew Zhi Yong is the head of the music department at SJK(C) Tiong Hua Kok Bin in Klang and is the Selangor state main music education trainer for the Klang district. He holds a Bachelor's degree in Music Education with honors from the Teacher's Training Institute of Malaysia. He has also completed Primary Level 1 of the Australian Kodály Certificate. Additionally, he actively gives talks and workshops on music education. He holds positions as a board member of the Children's Literature Association of Malaysia, a professional committee member for music education of the International Chinese Art Education Association, and is a co-founder of the non-profit learning platform Faqing Academy. His passion lies in the intersection of children's literature and music, and he was a flutist with the Malaysian Philharmonic Youth Orchestra.
